The Marx Brothers (Marx Kardeşler)
In the history of comedy and movies, there is probably no other group of brothers more popular or well-known than the Marx Brothers. Your parents probably know them—not personally—but your parents almost certainly watched them in their various films (from the years 1921–1949) and in various television appearances during the 1950s and 1960s.
In total there are six brothers but, sadly, the oldest—who is called Manfred—was born in January 1886 and died in July of the same year when he was only six months old. His parents are called Minnie (originally Meine) and Simon Marx. The Marx family lives in New York.
The Marx family is very poor. The brothers do not receive a good formal education, but they are very intelligent. They read a lot and have many interests, and as adults, each sibling can have an intelligent conversation with anyone.
There is money for music lessons (piano) only for Chico. Harpo (his real name is Adolph) teaches himself the harp. As an adult, Harpo is one of the best and most famous harpists in the world. The other five Marx Brothers have nicknames in the movies. Almost no one knows their real names. Their names—their real ones and their nicknames—are, from oldest to youngest:1. Leonard Marx (1887–1961): Boy2. Adolph Marx (1888–1964): Harpo3. Julius Henry Marx (1890–1977): Groucho4. Milton Marx (1893–1977): Gummo5. Herbert Marx (1901–1979): Zeppo
Each brother has a specific talent. Chico plays the piano and speaks with an Italian accent; Harpo never speaks, but he is an excellent mime artist and plays the harp magnificently; Groucho is the most eloquent and comical, and he also sings very well; Zeppo is the most handsome, and has a very “dry” sense of humor; Gummo does not appear in the movies, because Gummo’s talent is in the business world. For a while he is the agent for the Marx Brothers. There is one woman who is featured in seven of the films: Margaret Dumont is typically the female antagonist, usually directly against Groucho. Some people believe that Groucho and Margaret are married, but it is not the truth. Because she appears in so many films, many people consider her an honorary “Marx Brother.”
Of all the Marx Brothers, Groucho is the most famous—for his eloquence and for his physical appearance: Groucho usually wears a tuxedo, wears large black glasses, has a huge mustache, and always has a cigar in his hand, but rarely smokes it. .In total, the Marx Brothers (as a group) appear in fourteen films. (There are twenty more films in which a Marx Brother appears alone.)Here is a list, with the year of production, of the Marx Brothers films.
