Once upon a time, there is a kind and smart girl named Sara Crewe. She lives with her rich father, Captain Crewe, in India. When she is seven, her father takes her to a boarding school in London. The headmistress, Miss Minchin, is not very nice, but pretends to like Sara because of her money. Sara has many nice things and her own room. Captain Crewe buys her a beautiful doll. Sarah names it Emily. Emily is her favorite toy and best friend. Sarah imagines that Emily can understand her and often talks to her, especially when she feels lonely.
One day, Sara’s father dies, and he loses all his money. Sara becomes very poor and has to work as a servant at the school. Miss Minchin is very mean to her. Sara moves to a small, cold attic room. She wears old clothes and does hard chores.
Despite her hard life, Sara remains kind and polite. She pretends she is still a princess in her heart. She makes friends with a servant girl named Becky and a boy named Ermengarde.
One day, while walking to the market, she finds a coin. She is very hungry, but instead of buying food for herself, she uses the money to buy some bread for a poor, hungry girl she meets. This shows Sara’s big heart and generosity.
Sara also meets a monkey who belongs to her neighbor, Mr. Carrisford.
Mr. Carrisford was a friend of Sara’s father. He finds out Sara is living in the attic and feels very sad. He tells his servant, Ram Dass, to bring Sara nice things and food secretly. One day, Sara finds out Mr. Carrisford is her father’s friend. Mr. Carrisford tells Sara that she is rich again because he found her father’s lost money.
Sara moves to Mr. Carrisford’s house and brings Becky with her. She is happy and never forgets to be kind and caring to everyone.
